Bonnaroo recap v.2: The Beastie Boys + Special Guest and Public Enemy (Exclusive footage)

I'm not gonna lie: our first night camping at Bonnaroo was pretty much a disaster. A rainstorm descended on the grounds and wiped out our fragile camp site, forcing us to pack ourselves like sardines into our borrowed white Buick Regal for the night. Thankfully, Day 2 of the fest brought solace from the urban north, with a line up of enough stellar New York City acts to take one's mind off the ruggedness of the outdoors. We caught up with some of our favorite Brooklyn bands in the hip-hop deficient early part of the day, and were more than pumped for the evening's highlights: legendary NYC heavyweights The Beastie Boys and Public Enemy.
The Beastie Boys hit the main stage, and electrified a hyped crowd that stretched literally as far as I could see. They played an interesting swath of their back catalog, even making room for a substantial segment featuring their later instrumental work. They played their own instruments, and maintained an energy that made me wonder how guys their age find motivation. Half-way through the set, the Beasties announce that they have a special guest and out walks yet another New York Giant, Nasir Jones. Not quite sure what made God's Son grace Manchester with his presence, but the new collab, rumored to be called "Let it Out" from the Boys' forthcoming LP, The Hot Sauce Committee, was a welcome development.

Later Public Enemy hit This Tent (all the stages had similarly generic names: The Other Tent, That Tent, etc. not so cute when you're trying to find your way around.) with militant back-up performers in full military dress. Chuck D and Flava are no spring chickens, either, but criss-crossed the stage in an enthusiastic front-to-back performance of It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back as if it came out just yesterday. Check out exclusive footage their performance of "Don't Believe the Hype" below, and be sure to check back tomorrow for our exclusive interview with Chuck D in the flesh.
