Show Review: Freeway, Jake One and friends @ the Highline

So we opened up a New York office.

Ramon being a native Austinite didn't make us hip enough, so I sold the car and what was left of my soul and hopped a plane for Williamsburg, New York - ground zero for people who wear infuriating outfits for a living.

Of course, before the trust-fund condos and "vintage" shops sprang up, 1 or 2 or 10 genre-defining hip-hop legends got started not all that far from here. Last night I went to my first rap show as an NY transplant, and it was actually worth the commute.

Local spotlight: Wale X Austin, TX

waleweb.jpg

From the Texas bureau, one of our favorite rising stars swings by the Cap City tonight. Shouts to the Score More camp for their consistent string of top tier hip-hop bills they've been programming over the past year.

The local support is likewise stellar: Kevin Jack parlays his smart bars and aggressive live game to another well-earned opening slot, the Table Manners crew DJs are the most consistent collective in town, Crew 54, with their aggressive southern style, don't play.

Jay-Z to headline Bonnaroo

jay-z-all-points-west.jpg

Fringe attendees debating festivals have another conundrum: Jay-Z is double dipping and set to top the bill of another staple festival: June's traditionally hippie-heavy, Tennessee held, three-day camp out, Bonnaroo.

For hip-hoppers debating between Roo and Coachella, the scales shift favorably to Bonnaroo with newly confirmed artists:

  • Jay Electronica
  • Wale
  • Kid Cudi
  • Nas & Damian Marley
  • Mayer Hawthorne

Can't wait for summer.

Chamillionaire releases new mixtape, reunites with Paul Wall

chamillionaire-major-pain.jpg

With the backdrop of industry perils pushing back Chamillionaire's third major label album, Venom, the Houston rapper delivers on a December promise to bring "major pain" via a mixtape dubbed, um, Major Pain. Like his classically underrated and excellent Mixtape Messiah volumes, Pain is set to be an ongoing series available through his website.

"If you happen to take a trip to New York, and you happen to bump into anybody, anybody in Manhattan that's walking out of the Universal building -- you know, anybody that you see in a suit and a funny looking bow tie, you deliver this message, you tell them this, February 2 here comes the pain, they don't push us back"

In an ironic twist, Venom finally gets a March 16 street date.

And in related, welcome news to fans of their seminal 2002 classic, Get Ya Mind Correct, Cham is reuniting with longtime cohort and brief beef buddy, Paul Wall, for a nationwide tour that jump starts next month during South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.

Rhymesayers to host show for Haiti

86.jpg

The musician activism continues building. Details after the jump.

"It's embarrassing to admit how unaware I've been of the living conditions in Haiti. And that's before the earthquake hit. I'm honored to be involved with this fundraiser and I'm thankful for the conditions that allow me to be on the giving end of this charity. I trust that our fans feel the same way."

Lauryn Hill destroys "Doo Wop (That Thing)" over the weekend during New Zealand's Ragamuffin Festival. I wish her heart still was in rhyming.
